Week 5 Update - Mr. Braden’s Builders

Today we worked in the rows to help protect the soil around our bean plants from weeds, temperatures, and the sun stealing water and moisture from our plants. We did that using hay to mulch the area around the plants. We had some good direction from Farmer Cullen to show us the ropes and did some great work protecting our beans. It should be a great harvest when the time comes!

During free time the kids organized their own games, and explored the surrounding area of our classroom. We do this every week and I always appreciate the opportunity for self directed, unstructured play time for our students. It’s importance can’t be understated.

We also resurrected a square foot garden bed from last year and began to plant it anew. After pulling the old mulch, weeding, and watering the bed we put the square foot grid that is common for the style back in place. We discussed what things could grow over the winter, and what advantages they might have when the Texas sun calms down a bit, when the bugs relax a little, and when water can stick around for a little bit longer. Largely we planted a few varieties of lettuces and some radishes. We made sure to label each of our plants in their squares and began the process of waiting for our delicious yield.
