Week 5 Update - Miss Micha’s Builders

Hey there Parents & Families!

I hope you are well. This week was so much fun.

Friday’s class had a Morning Game of Hungry Hungry Seagulls at the large drop off field. We made our way to our classroom to begin Morning Circle. We shared about ourselves by going around with the Talking Stick. We then took a hike up to feed the cows. This week we had one cow who was fond of our offerings & she ate all the grass we wanted to feed her. The outdoor patio is now abundant with pumpkins, so we chose one to be the head of our Scarecrow making later this month.

Saturday’s class had a sweet Morning share, then we had Sit Spot near & around the dry creek. We talked about our experience together. Most really enjoyed this activity of observing Nature in silence. We decided to start building a shelter in this area. The kids worked very hard to create a little oasis.

After Snack, Friday’s class had their Farm Chore of mulching the beets. We gently disturbed the soil, picking out grasses & prepping for the mulching layer. I read a book by Susan Verde called, I Am Peace. to Saturday’s Builders. We then made our way to the Hoop House for Raised Garden Bed planting. The goal was to hammer nails into the platform, then tie some twine to the nails creating square foot sections. They liked the hammering aspect so much that I provided 2x4’s, nails & hammers so they all could practice to their heart’s desire. We then planted Kale, Butterhead Lettuce, Reddish & Cilantro.

After their chore, Friday’s class visited the chickens. We observed their behavior, particularly the roosters. We then said hello to a raccoon that was caught the night before. She was so cute~ & clearly overwhelmed by being caught & all the children cooing over her! We raced back to the classroom to draw raccoon pictures.

After lunchtime, Saturday revisited the Carving Agreements, then started carving sticks with knives. They did great! It was a joy to see the “Ah~ha” when they grasped the concept of inviting their thumb into the motion by adding pressure & facilitating precise direction while carving. Half the class carved while the other used a mortar & pestle to grind pigments using hardened red clay & water. We then switched places. Friday’s class got the chance to Soap Carve with butter knives. It was awesome. Before we knew it, the end of the day was upon us. We had such a great time.

Thanks so much everyone. We will see you next week!

Warm Regards,

~Miss Micha
