Week 2 Update - Ms. Tammy’s Explorers
Friday on the Farm was so fun combining the two Explorer classes. Cali the farm dog joined us and brought many giggles and smiles to all. We began with a cute story about how a rainbow appeared over the farm and then was zapped into a bunch of pieces by a bolt of lightning and rained down rainbow colors all over the farm. Each student was given a few pieces of this rainbow (paint chips) and we walked around the farm finding the matching colors. Almost all the colors were found as spring is bringing so many abundant colors.
After visiting the bright orange flowers on the farm, we harvested some California Poppy flowers to be dried to turn into herbal medicine at a later time. California Poppy is a non-addictive, very safe, and gentle herb that even kids can enjoy. It works on the nervous system to help relax “hot & wired” systems and to calm anxiety. It helps bring a sense of calmness to one’s body. In fact, some of our students noticed that by just touching the flowers, then felt calmer and happier.
Our big farm chore of the day was to water our plants with compost tea, which helps our plants with immunity and protection against bugs and crazy weather. Compost tea serves as a multivitamin/probiotic for the plants to be stronger for what may come their way. This is one way we are able to grow without the use of any harmful chemicals!
The heat of the day kicked in, so we took to the trees and visited our fun secret spot in the dry creek bed. Here is where we played with nature, learning about body awareness, climbing skills, stacking rocks and balance, building with sticks and rocks to create Fairy shelters.
I read a story to the class called “The Sunflower House” by Eve Bunting. This is a beautiful story about building a sunflower house, which will be a project we will work on this spring semester together. We will get started on this project this week.
Mr. Austen will be back this week, so back to regular class sites. I am looking forward to more fun this Friday.
Thank you,
Ms. Tammy
