Week 1 Update - Ms. Micha’s Farmadillos
Hello Parents & Families, Miss Micha here!
What a wonderful first day at Farm School. This morning we gathered for a big group game of Scramble. We greeted the chickens then made our way to our outdoor classroom. There we got settled as I introduced myself & read a story called Giving Thanks, by Chief Jake Swamp.
Once we were acquainted with gratitude we went around with the Talking Stick, sharing our names, how we were feeling & what we felt grateful for today. We then did some stretching exercises & ran around our class elm tree.
We then got the chance to share what we thought some good Agreements would be for us to stay safe & flowing throughout our time together. We had some good ones! Once we were in agreement we explored the space around the classroom, climbing trees & discovering fun spaces to play in.
We walked the rows of growing veggies. The kids were super excited as they identified okra, tomato, pepper & corn. We smelled & handled the fragrant tulsi & then learned about the composting process. After our tour we played a game called The Wind Blows. It’s a great game that helped us discover things we have in common with one another.
Next was our Farm Chore of planting potatoes! We each got to plant 3 with Farmer Austen & Farmer Ryan’s help. We learned a lot about the planting process, as well as regenerative farming. Once we did that we took a water break & many were ready to get back to it! We helped align & steady the drip line emitters in place along our planted row.
After a nice lunch in the shade, we enjoyed some imaginative play time. I noticed so many acts of kindness today. Another happily helped tie their new friend’s shoe & one student was struggling climbing our tree using the ladder rungs. They kindly directed the other step by step from below; so sweet!
The kids had the option to do a scavenger hunt so we had that going at the same time. Today was amazing & the kids did super well following directions & getting acquainted with not only the farm but with each other!
Thank you all for offering this experience to your amazing children. We are looking forward to what this semester brings!
All the Best,
Miss Micha
